Maltempo plays Alkan - Quasi Faust Audio + Sheet music

Vincenzo Maltempo gives an epic performance of Quasi Faust, the 2nd movement, 30 ans from Charles-Valentin Alkan's daunting Piano Sonata, entitled "Grande Sonate Les Quatre Ages". Australian pianist Piers Lane said: "Whenever I performed pieces like Quasi Faust with its demonic battle between good and evil and its audacious pianistic demands, the audience has been polarized: some listeners have...

Bernstein conducts Dukas - The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Paul Dukas's sumptuous The Sorcerer's Apprentice, an orchestral scherzo after a ballade of the same title by Goethe. Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic. My favourite recording of the work. Believe it or not, this piece is quite new to me. I was familiar with Dukas thanks to his epic Piano Sonata in E-flat minor, and even uploaded a live recording of it by Marc-André Hamelin wi...

I hate spamming octaves
Lo que empieza en el 4:50 me suena demasiado!!!
Interesting notation in the upper part of II, 5:09. He left out the break?
Lots of pedal use. This is how Beethoven wrote it down and probably intended it. Am I a fan? Not so much, but who cares.
One of my favorite Medtner sonatas, filled with absolutely amazing moments
Prodigieux...❤
Liszt. Soulless. Heartless. Empty.
How? Listen to "Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude", you might change your mind. Or to what may be the beginning of impressionism, "Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este".

Liszt is honestly one of the most expressive composers I've ever known
it is idiosyncratic when compared to instructions, which there are little to none, if this was played without any nuance it would truly sound robotic and inhuman. yes its an etude but i think alkan must have intended the player to play rubato and interpret their piece to their own idea of its musicality. perhaps that was just another challenge to it, creating your own emotions to express from it. i mean at 3:06 it just sounds so dramatic and expressive, this is the romantic era so i do believe alkan intended for the player to add their own spin on it.
Absolute logic structures and the "barbaro"-emotions form a complex and fascinating unity! Bartok's compositions are like Bach concerning structure and motif-building, but they sound always like the enfant terrible that wants to shock the audience with "barbaric" and harsh dissonances and rhythms.
2:10
What happened to "optional arapeggio" which should occur at about 11:12 on this recording? To date, I have only heard Van Cliburn play it.
1:14 that is so satisfying lol
The things that gets me about the this recording is that there’s moments where it sounds like bombs are going off 💣
Jesus is the only way. We have all sinned and deserve Hell. Sins that may seem small in our eyes are big in God's and are worthy of Hell, such as lying lusting and stealing. But if we repent and trust only in Jesus, he is faithful and will save us from Hell and give us eternal life in Heaven. Trust in Jesus! John 3:16 Romans 6:23❤😊❤
I guess that means I'm going to hell then 🥲

Wow, Rzewski with a Xenakis-attack! Stunning. Thank you for sharing.
I love this piece so much, and since I'm here again its likely I'll listen to only this piece today!!!
Epic and powerful recording. Most are good on RUclips but I do prefer Medtner playing this himself. And Stephen Beus
Beautiful piece. Inspired

One of my favourites :}
On that fateful night, dozens of audience members mysteriously disappeared. It is rumored that only wisps of smoke and small piles of ashes were found in the seats they once occupied. Also curious to note that yelling "FIRE" during this live performance was not considered a crime, but a public service announcement.
Haha! Couldn't agree more. Not exactly technically perfect, but who cares with this demonic performance.

The speed at 4:15 is like glissandos😭😭😭

This is indeed very playful and elegant. But it sounds firmly in the style of the Hungarian rhapsodies.
I genuinely do not understand how 6:51 is playable. those jumps crossing over the other hand seem thoroughly impossible, but alternating hands on the octave is also not viable. I guess I has to be played as written but... how? maltempo does a superhuman job but also the theme in the right hand is barely hearable (in the parallel spots as well). I guess if he can't play it no-one can probably
